The Ultimate Moving Checklist

June 6, 2019 by admin

Never underestimate just how big of a project moving house is. For a lot of people it will be the biggest project they ever undertake (outside of their professional lives). So, get prepared with this Ultimate Moving Checklist. Use this guide to ensure that everything runs smoothly and you avoid all the stress, panic and mayhem that unprepared people put themselves through.

The Early Bird Gets The Worm

Whether you’re moving locally, or moving interstate, the earlier you start preparing, the easier the move will be. Moving house is the kind of thing you want to chip away at, not rush through in one weekend. The Checklist recommends you start the process two months out by:

  • Doing a price comparison with a number of moving companies by asking for a free volume estimate and in-home visit
  • Once you have your removals company locked down, create an itemised list of expenses so you can move within your budget
  • Start putting together an inventory of your belongings. Be ruthless when you decide what you’re going to take. The cost of the move is directly related to how much you’re moving so don’t pay to take things that you don’t want, need or love
  • Organise storage now so you don’t miss out or have to store your valuables in an unsatisfactory location
  • Start using up all your perishable and frozen foods so you don’t have to waste anything.

Keep Up The Pace

An early start doesn’t give you an excuse to rest. Keep chipping away at your move by doing the following with two weeks to go:

  • Contact your moving company to finalise the details of the moving plan, making sure you’re both on the same page. The most important details to confirm are access points at both addresses
  • Contact authorities to ensure you can satisfy all traffic control regulations. You should also be aware of any restrictions that apply to parking and lift access
  • Don’t move in to a powerless house. Make sure you have hot water, lights and entertainment on your first night at your new home by having the utilities connected by your arrival
  • If you need your car for the move make sure it is in good working order by having it serviced
  • Book in a babysitter for moving day if you have young children
  • Create a detailed floor plan of your new home, showing where everything should be set up. You can give this to your removalists on the moving day so it’s easy for them to set everything up
  • Organise a friend to look after your pets on moving day to ensure they stay safe and away from the action

If you stick to the pace set out by the moving checklist, the big day will be a breeze. Everything will go like clockwork and you’ll be kicking back in your new address wondering what all the fuss was about.
